Abstract

Health is the asset and basic human rights of an individual. Investment in health care sector increases the productivity of an individual, which leads to revenue generation and eradication of poverty. The primary health care system is the determinant pattern for the development of any state. The government has to address the health problems of the community. Government, after independence, has adopted certain best health care programmes like eradication of cholera, family planning, polio immunization and had been successful in eradicating many diseases. Despite the efforts, health sector has remained inefficient in preventing and controlling many infectious and endemic diseases. The inefficiency cannot be attributed only on the part of the Government but also due to lack of awareness and attitude of the people not to approach health care centre run by government in case of emergency, has led to this pitiable condition. The present requirement is genuine policy which considers the acceptable level of health for all the people. The paper tries to understand the issues concerning health care, initiatives adopted by the Government and recommendations for better health care system in India.
