Ethical values in sports- Need for monitoring sporting activities towards bringing integrity of sports

Abstract

This paper addresses the issues relating to ethical values in sports and highlights the need for tightening ethical in all types of sporting activities. Sports ethics is often a much debated topic because sports sector a multi billion industry attracting multi faceted talents, involving multi-national brands and catering to millions of audiences across globe. Sports activities have become a part of daily life for billions of youth and several types of physical activities are being followed. But along with increase in popularity of sports, the zeal to win and success is also increasing. This has given rise to inclusion of certain unethical means of winning the game. In a bid to attract sports fans and sports brands, several unethical practices have been linked to sports. Global concerns around unethical practices such as bribery, corruption, discrimination, favouring, match fixing, sport fixing, etc are haunting the sports sector. Players are forced to enhance their consistent performance by doping through drugs and energy drinks. This doping test has been reported extensively in athletics, boxing, weight lifting, field events etc. As Sporting activities have been increasingly promoted by corporate companies, the zeal to win consistently has become more demanding. Sports are not seen as a physical exercise, now it has become income generating activity and commercial gains are weighed more than anything. Hence sports events have become more recreational. The lucrative financial gains are very profitable to corporate sector and corporate companies woo billions of fans with recreation, pleasure and cheering in sporting activity. The ever increasing profits and fiscal benefits are making sports to delete ethics fade away and ignominious ways to stay successful has become more common. Quick, immediate and short cuts in money making through sports events has become a fashion today. There are several unprincipled short cuts to instant fame and success.
