This paper explores the epigraphical sources pointing to irrigation water canals and highlights the importance paid to construction of water canals and tanks during Hoysala period with special reference to Ranaghatta tank. The traditional technology of creating water sources for agricultural purposes and for residential purposes was hailed by the society as a work of permanent charity. Several epigraphs of this region refer to these acts of charities and praise the administrative officers who supported such water management. The social ethics of building aqua ducts, canals, water tanks, wells or supporting building of water channels was eulogized in epigraphs. The technology and knowhow of Hoysala period in construction of water canals was so perfect that present day Karnataka government is considering the technical expertise of this canal in resolving the drought situation in this region. The Water Resources Development department of Karnataka Government is compelled to re-examine and re -assess the Hoysala period canal system to find answers to drought prone areas in Hassan district. Present day Karnataka government has initiated a proposal of linking a canal from Yagachi river to Dorasamudra, a historical tank spread across nearly 850 acres in Halebeedu of Belur taluk of Hassan district.
