Influences gender on adjustment and academic achievement among adolescents

Abstract

In the present study an attempt is made to assess the influence of gender on levels of adjustment and academic achievement among adolescents studying in class 9 in Mysore city. A total of 100 adolescent students studying in Mysore city were randomly selected. They were administered Bell's Adjustment Inventory (1968) which measured adjustment of an individual in 4 areas (Home, health, social and emotiona).

Academic achievement scores were collected from the respective schools. Contingency coefficient test and Independent samples ‘t’ tests were applied to see the association between boys and girls in their level of adjustment and academic scores respectively. Results indicated that boys and girls had similar levels of adjustment in all the areas. However, girls scored significantly higher than boys in academic achievement.
