Effect of Language Games in Teaching English Among Elementary Students with Reference to Their Achievement in English

Abstract

Language learning is a hard task, which can sometimes be frustrating. Well chosen games are invaluable as they give students a break and at the same time allow students to participate simultaneously develops the language skills. Language Games are highly motivating since they are amusing and at the same time they are challenging. Language Games are based on specific objectives that the learners should achieve and therefore more directly based on the analysis of a particular situation. English Language has been taught in India as Second Language and it is taught either through Direct Method or Bilingual-method but researcher found that Achievement in English among fourth standard students of many Schools of Vijayanagar in Bangalore remained below average. Hence researcher planned to do experimental study to tryout Language Game Package to teach English Language. The researcher had developed Language game programme for the fourth standard students. The language games used in the programme were Crossword puzzles, Kangaroo words, quick fire quiz, and role play to teach English. The student performance was assessed by the achievement test in English was prepared by the researcher. The findings of the study were the students taught with language games outperformed in contrast with the students taught with traditional teaching. There was no significant difference between boys and girls in their achievement those were taught English with Language games programme
