Abstract

The present study is an attempt to study the impact of modernity on adjustment styles among male and female law college students. The sample of 200 students consists of 100 boys and 100 girls in the age group of 18–25 yrs, studying in three year and five year Law course at five different Law colleges of Hubli-Dharwad city, Karnataka. Systematic random sampling method was used to choose the sample. They were administered the Individual modernity scale developed by Smith and Inkeles (1966). Later it has been adapted to Indian population, scale called scale-I (Singh, 1975) to assess the extent of modernity and Bell's adjustment inventory has been used to collect data on adjustment levels. The collected data was analysed using percentage scores and χ2-test. The findings of the study indicate that there is a significant impact of modernity on adjustment levels of Law college students, χ2-value for male students is 50.0676 and the χ2-value for female students is 55.1517 and the χ2-value for total sample group of students is 50.4832 they are significant at 0.01 level. There is significant association between excellent and good adjustment with modernity. And results show that there is association between unsatisfactory and very unsatisfactory adjustment with traditinality. There is no difference among male and female students in significance level of adjustment and modernity.
