Abstract

Progress in the field of industry depends not on advances in technology, but also upon the cordiality and pleasantness of human relations and are fundamentally psychological in nature. They depend upon the interest, motives, sentiments and passions of individuals. In the content of performance review, counselling refers to help given by a superior to his subordinate in improving the latter’s performance. It is a process of helping subordinates to achieve better adjustments with his work environment to behave as a psychologically matured individual and to help in achieving a better understanding of others so that his dealings with them can be effective and purposeful. Thus, the basic objective of counselling is an overall development of the subordinates. In precise terms, it can be described as an interaction process between counsellor(supervisor) and the counselee(sub ordinate) to understand the existing behaviour pattern and the environment with a view to bring about a more fruitful adjustment. Counseling provides the employees with an opportunity to express their difficulties and worries to the helping person. In the process, they greatly alter their views and look some what cheerful and less depressed. In a good number of cases, it was revealed that employees were affected with social evils such as drinking, indebtedness etc. The personal counselling approach creates an awareness in them as to what is happening to them and how they themselves are responsible for bad habits leading to very poor job performance and habitual absenteeism.
