Abstract

Women empowerment is one of the important contemporary issues in developing countries. It helps women in making their own choices with regard to their lives and makes them more active in the society. It has been measured by some specific indicators which show the level of empowerment in the specific region. In this background, the present paper is an attempt to assess the regional disparities in the levels of women empowerment taking urban areas of Karnataka state. To assess the level of women empowerment five variables like urban general sex ratio, urban child sex ratio, proportion of urban female Literacy rate to total female literacy rate, the share of urban female workers to total female workers and the share of urban female population to total population have been taken into consideration. District level secondary data has been collected from census; State hand book etc. Kendall’s ranking method has been computed to ascertain the level of women empowerment, which is depicted using choropleth map. The analysis reveals that southern and coastal parts of Karnataka (Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Bangalore Urban etc) have high level of women empowerment and northern part of the state (Bijapura, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur etc) have lower level of women empowerment in the urban areas in the state.
