Abstract

Housing has been an important sector in the development processes. Decent living conditions reflects the pattern of houses in which people lives. In India providing shelter is one of the strategies of development. Despite many housing programmes launched still millions of people are houseless both in urban as well as rural areas. In this regard housing cooperatives particularly in urban area have been playing a major role in promoting sites and houses to many needy people at affordable prices compare to other agencies like Housing Board, HUDCO, urban development authorities, etc. Karnataka State Cooperative Housing Federation has been providing sites particularly to the siteless people. Housing cooperatives have several advantages than any other housing agencies. Paper is aiming to discuss the shortage of houses in India and other remedial measures in supplying houses through the housing cooperatives.
