Abstract

This paper tries to analyze the trends of poverty in India and Karnataka, separately for rural and urban area. The nature and magnitude of poverty in Karnataka are also examined and is compared with the Southern states. It found that, there is decreasing trends of poverty in India and also in rural and urban side. The rate of rural poverty in India is higher than urban and even national level. On the other hand, there is a fluctuation in poverty trends in Karnataka and both in rural and urban side. The rate of urban poverty in Karnataka is higher than rural and even in state level also. Karnataka is the poorest state among the Southern states in aggregate and rural and urban levels. The North-Karnataka houses large number of poor. It was found that there is high positive correlation between total rural families and total BPL families. By caste wise, SC and ST have highest number of poor than other castes in Karnataka.
