Knowledge and perceptions of homosexuals about HIV/AIDS

Male homosexuals are considered as one of the high risk groups for HIV/AIDS. Stigma attached to their sexuality, non acceptance in the society, rigid gender separation, glorified femininity and masculinity, consciousness of sin, etc. have made their sexual identities and preferences hidden and silent have made them more vulnerable. Ignorance, lack of knowledge, inadequate assessment, treatment, and prevention etc leads them in becoming high risk groups for HIV/AIDS. Different studies all over the world considered sex between two males involves high risk for HIV transmission. Present study is divided into two sections: first section tries to understand the macro level studies which provide facts about knowledge and perceptions of male homosexuals. In second section, field level data on knowledge and perceptions of male homosexuals about HIV is examined. This article tries to shed light over the level of knowledge, attitude and consistency in condom use among homosexuals of Dharwad district.
