Abstract

Municipal compost quality testing is necessary to determine the quality of the compost in order to protect the environment and human beings from the harmful substances it contains, to protect workers, to maintain the composting process and to verify compost. The present study was performed to analysis the Physico-chemical, biological characteristics and heavy metals concentrations of municipal solid wastes compost at Mysore city. The results reveal that, The heavy metals are within the permissible limits of Indian standards. The Physico-chemical characteristics of compost sample point of view the parameters like moisture content, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, organic matter, TKN, potassium and C/N ratio were within the permissible limits of recommended standards. The pH, electrical conductance and total phosphorous above the permissible limits of various standards. The biological study concerns only a few microorganisms present. Finally, concluded that, the Mysore Municipal corporation produced MSW compost sample were fine quality and free from heavy metals concentrations. This compost sample can be used for fertilizer or soil amendment.
