In this paper an attempt is made to understand the roots and genesis of the peasant movement and social and economic issues of peasant movement in Karnataka. After independence the peasant movements in Karnataka started agitation for economic demands ex: remunerative prices, subsidized inputs, loan waiver etc, were included in the charter of demands. To broaden the support base of the movement, social issues like reservation in education and jobs, abolition of dowry, discouraging drinking, and taking action against harassing caste were raised. The rise of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha provided needed organisation and leadership and succeeded in transforming the peasants discontentment into movement. The main thrust of this paper is to understand the evident agrarian discontent. Methodology of this paper is blend of both secondary and primary sources.
