Abstract

Our dynamic Prime Minister, Sri. Narendra Modi, in his historical Independence Day speech had emphasized on the ‘Make in India’ concept. In other words, encouraging more entrepreneurship in the country. Recently the Finance Minister, Mr. ArunJaitley in his budget speech (2014) had announced a 10,000 crore startup fund for entrepreneurship development. India has definitely seen a lot of progress since the LPG era, creating a lot of job opportunities and benefits to its citizens. Improvement and development in several areas have helped in economic growth. However this shows only a rosy picture. When we delve and explore into the societal aspects, we are in for a rude shock. There are several individuals belonging to the general populace, community or group who are yet to feel and experience the benefits of economic development happening around them. This is due to lack of skill and employability factors. Ensuring proper training and motivating young individuals to become entrepreneurs would go a long way in ensuring sustainable development. Entrepreneurship development programmes definitely adds to the list of such initiatives. This paper tries to focus critically on the steps taken by the government on issues relating to Entrepreneurship development in the country. An attempt has been made through this study to document available information regarding promoting entrepreneurship for rural masses against the milieu of the socioeconomic context and challenges faced. The study tries to compile the extensive amount of information on various entrepreneurship programmes in India.
