Environment compliments the smooth working of the economy. Environment and development are naturally so intimate yet so inimical as to compel the contemporary dialogue to take note of them. Environment and sustainable development have always been the topics for discussion. A great deal of thinking and rethinking about environment versus development in the academic circle has been articulated as the existing pattern of interaction between society and environment in the name of development has turned to be pathological posing a threat to human survival. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) ranks how well countries perform on high priority environmental issues in two broad policy areas: protection of human health from environmental harm and protection of ecosystems. Within these two policy objectives, the EPI scores country performance in nine issue areas comprised of 20 indicators. Indicators in the EPI measure how close countries are to meeting internationally established targets or, in the absence of agreed targets, how they compare to the range of observed countries. The present study is an attempt to analyse EPI from the point of view of the controversial relationship between environment and sustainable development and with the interface of the twelfth five year plan.
