Wireless mesh networking with xbee and zigbee

Digi XBee is the brand name of a popular family of form factor compatible wireless connectivity modules from Digi International. The first XBee modules were introduced under the MaxStream brand in 2005We perform a performance evaluation of ZigBee mesh networks based on XBeemodules, in terms of packet delay and received signal strength (RSSI). The XBee radios can all be used with the minimum number of connections — power (3.3 V), ground, data in and data out (UART), with other recommended lines being Reset and Sleep. We evaluate the performance for both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments in buildings and a parking lot. The results of our study are useful for building wireless sensor networks and communication networks of mobile robots where the communication distances between nodes are greater than the single-hop range and hence communication between nodes requires multi-hop transmissions.
