Climatic water budget - A case study of Rahata Tahsil in Ahmednagar district (MH)

Abstract

The present work attempts to analyse the climatic water budget. Analyses of study are based on weekly rainfall data. The average rainfall is about 515.53mm receives during monsoon season. The climatological water demand for potential evapotranspiration is estimated about 1391.2mm by using Thornthwaite and Mather (1955) technique. There is water deficit for annual mean rainfall. The distribution of weekly rainfall shows that only 38th to 39th weeks have rainfall greater than PE and rest of the weeks have water deficit. However, field observation shows that there is some ground water recharge and runoff also. The total amount of rainwater is estimated about 3318Mh for mean rainfall, 4396 Mh for mean + STD and 5474 Mh for mean+2STD. For greater than mean rainfall, coarse shallow soils located in western part of the tahsil have comparatively more water surplus after AE than the deep black soils located in the central part and along with rivers. There is no surplus water observed for annual mean rainfall. It means that this available rainwater is evaporated from the soils which may consider as a soil water resource. However, about 604 Mh surplus water is estimated for rainfall is mean + STD and 1188 Mh for mean+2STD.
