The article examines the phenomenon of linguistic variability as an object of various linguistic research. The problem of variability was studied at all levels of the language system, as well as in the relation "language - external world". She interested researchers of the phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactic levels of language, the level of the text, as well as adherents of the sociological, functional-communicative, pragmatic and other approaches to language. The result of these scientific studies was the creation of various theories of linguistic variability.
