Style, art and technique in Hemingway's writings

It was the First World War that separated Hemingway like some others from the genteel and baroque stylistic American tradition. Hemingway was a journalist turned into a writer. Hemingway believed that writing was not an ‘interior decoration’. He developed and perfected a new prose style, a style based on short, flat, unadorned statements which adequately expressed the disillusioned and cynical mood of the war-ridden society. There is a man behind every book and in this respect Hemingway's style is not an escape from personality but an escape into it. Since words are the building material of style, it is imperative to discuss Hemingway's use of language. Hemingway's diction is as concrete as that of Swift and as clear as George Orwell's. The greatest burden in Hemingway's writings is borne by concrete nouns and the simplest verbs. Hemingway's most significant contribution to style is his effective use of dialogue in his short stories and novels. Hemingway's ‘powerful style’ forming mastery of the art of modern narration has been much eulogized. Irony is an important device in Hemingway's fiction.
