Racial violence in post independence S. Africa is often seen as fallout of the apartheid era. The various documented incidents of attacks on Afrikaner farmers are presented by the white pressure groups as “white genocide” in the former British colony. Coetzee as a novelist has earlier made scantly clad remarks on race in S. Africa in ‘In the Heart of the Country’ but here he preoccupies himself with the sole issue of violence and racial profiling of the same in S. African milieu. The novel is also a document of the changing racial and social dynamics of s Africa where the present president still harbours the nostalgic glory of ‘kill the Boer, shoot the farmer’ era!
