The focus is on the tangles and convulsions of the relationships between married men and women and those which depict the loneliness, isolation, frustrations, disappointments and thwarted potential of adult men and women, married and single alike. The most poignant instance of failed and disillusioned married life, doomed to failure almost from the start, it that of Elizabeth Willard in Winesburg, Ohio. This theme, as we have seen already, figures in several of the Winesburg stories, but finds a more conspicuous expression in Anderson's later stories. He seems to view the sexual relationship between men and women as a mirror, which reflects the problematic nature of the self.
