Abstract

Though born in a princely family, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur devoted her life to the betterment of the social and political conditions of her countrymen. A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, she participated in the freedom movement but it was the field of women empowerment that she enriched the most. She successfully identified the various social impediments that women were facing and tried to uplift the rural and urban women alike. She stressed on education and legal reforms to improve the plight of women and stood for their active political participation. She nurtured the All India Women's Conference which soon became the most important women's organization. Thus, her vision fuelled the empowerment of Indian women.
