Abstract

India has one of the largest technical manpower in the world. A strong education system is the cornerstone of any country's growth and prosperity. Education is recognized as one of the critical elements of the national development effort and Higher education, in particular, is of vital importance for the nation, as it is a powerful tool to build knowledge-based society of the 21stcentury. Education is the most crucial investment in human development. Education strongly influences improvement in health, hygiene, demographic profile, productivity and practically all that is connected with the quality of life. The policies and approach to investment in the Education sector and its development in the next decade assume critical significance from this standpoint. It is fairly common knowledge that education enables individuals to reach their full potential as human beings, individually as well as members of society.

Education is also the driver of a country's economic development, but it does not always get the priority it deserves. The Right to Education Act (RTE), enacted in 2009, has ushered in hope for school education in the country. Education, or the transmission, acquisition, creation and adaptation of information, knowledge, skills and values, is a key lever of sustainable development. As such, education is essential to individuals’ development as it is to the development of their families, of the local and national communities to which they belong, and to the world at large. It is well-established that education is an important catalyst for achieving all development goals. Indeed, in the same way that education and skill development has positive effects on health, poverty reduction and elimination of hunger.
