Abstract

Advancement of civilization is closely related to agriculture which produces food to satisfy hunger. Agro products are the life force, the very source of survival for the human kind. It is not only that man breathes with the support of food but major chunk of the world population is also dependent on the agriculture as their source of survival. An approximate 36% of the world's workers are engaged in agriculture with India's more than half of the population being directly and indirectly employed in this sector. Agriculture in India, since ancient times, is the most crucial sector for ensuring sustainable development. Agricultural development Is a precondition of our national prosperity. This paper presents various facts of agriculture of India as an agriculturist economy. Indian agricultural industry faces many phases. Our agriculture has remained under-developed for long time. But over the past four decades, India's record of progress in agriculture has been quite impressive from a nation dependent on food imports to feed its population. India Today is not only self sufficient in grain production but also has a substantial reserve. But even today agricultural sector faces so many challenges also like lack of technology and poor infrastructure. Growth rates of productivity are far below than global standards. To leverage global competitive advantage, Indian Agriculture needs intervention in the areas of policy, technology and market access. The Revolutionisation of agriculture sector is need of today, For this, our Government is taking several initiative in this field. This paper discusses in detail the various initiatives and recommendations leading to the expensive growth and development of agriculture. Further the paper also highlights the critical role of government in agricultural development. The Indian Agriculture is Industry is at the verge of a revolution today that will modernize the entire food chain in India.
