Education is considered as an important instrument for everyone not only for social development but also for economical upliftment. Education contributes directly to the growth of national income by improving the productive capacities of the labour force. Education in considered as an important tool for development and occupies a distinct place in Assam. A numbers of educational institutions are established in Assam imparting education to the students of entire. On the other hand it has been seen that the rural world is changing and young people need to be prepared to rise to the new opportunities. Now a day many rural people will need to become engaged in non-farm activities or migrate to urban areas. The paper was an attempt to study the role of higher education for rural development with special reference to rural areas of Assam. The paper was basically prepared with the help of secondary data collected from various books, journals, newspapers, and university and college wed-sites.
