Abstract

Adolescence is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood and so it is not a smooth one. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common health problem which is alarmingly increasing in teenage girls and young women during their early reproductive years. It is one of the most common endocrine disorders of women in reproductive age group, with prevalence of 4-12% globally. The aim is to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding PCOS among the students in selected PU College in Mangalore. The objectives were 1. To determine the level of knowledge on PCOS among the adolescents by conducting pre-test. 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme of knowledge on PCOS by comparing pre-test and post-test. 3. To find out the association between pre-test knowledge scores on PCOS with selected socio demographic variables. One group pre-test post-test non experimental research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The sample comprised of 35 students from a selected PU college of Mangalore. The sample was selected using non probability convenience sampling. A structured knowledge questionnaire and a structured teaching programme were designed and administered to assess the knowledge of adolescents regarding PCOS. The results were described by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The level of knowledge of the adolescents increased considerably after the structured teaching programme. In the pre-test 54.2% had poor knowledge and 40% had average knowledge whereas in the post test scores71.4 % had average and 17.2 % had poor knowledge on PCOS. The calculated paired t-test value of practices (t34=8.13, p<0.05) was higher than the table value (t34=0.811, p<0.05) which proved that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post test score of level of knowledge on PCOS among the adolescents. The structured teaching programme on PCOS was beneficial in terms of acquiring adequate knowledge effectively. The Chi-Square values for other socio demographic variables such as residence (8.054), income of the family (28.485) was greater than that of the table value. Thus, there was significant association between knowledge and socio demographic data such as residence and income of the family. From the study findings it can be concluded that the structured teaching programme regarding knowledge on PCOS was effective in terms of acquiring adequate knowledge on PCOS, it will definitely brief up their knowledge, which in turn contributes to improve the total quality of one’s reproductive health.
