Abstract

Most women experience peri-menopausal symptoms during 40–55 years. The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions on perimenopausal problems of women in a selected community in Kerala. Objectives were to assess the level of perimenopausal problems and the distress of women, find the relationship between perimenopausal problems and distress of women, evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions on perimenopausal problems and distress of women and determine the association of perimenopausal problems and distress of women with selected extraneous variables. Quasi experimental research with pretest post control group design was used. The sample consisted of 100 subjects who were selected using purposive sampling. The tools used were questionnaire to identify the variables, rating scales to assess perimenopausal problems and distress. Content validity of the tool was done and reliability was checked by testretest method using Karl Pearson's correlation. Reliability of menopausal rating scale was 0.924 and of distress rating scale was 0.833. Pilot study was conducted and data were amenable to statistical analysis. The main study was conducted from 20-03-14 to 30-06-04. The pretest was conducted for both groups. Nursing interventions were administered only to experimental group. Post test was conducted for both groups after one month using the same tools.

The findings revealed that there was positive correlation between perimenopausal problems and distress of women (p<0.01). The mean score of reduction of perimenopausal problems of women was higher in experimental group than those in control group (p<0.05). The mean score of reduction of distress of women was higher in experimental group than those in control group (p<0.05). Hence Nursing interventions were effective in reducing perimenopausal problems and distress of women. There was no association of perimenopausal problems and distress of women with selected extraneous variables in control group and experimental group.(p>0.05)
