Assessment of the prevalence, risk factors of internet gaming disorder and psychological correlates in general population of north India

Abstract

In 2013 American psychiatric association decided to incorporate internet gaming disorder as non-substance addiction. This study aimed to find the prevalence and risk factors.

It was a cross-section observational study conducted on a general population. The sample size was time limited. A valid standard questionnaire (PHQ-9, IGDS, GAD-7 Scales) was used to collect data.

There was 82 male and 43 female involved in this study. The prevalence of internet gaming disorder was 16.8%. Out of 125 subjects, a total of 21 had internet gaming disorder. There was a significant association between internet gaming disorder and age, gender, economics, profession, living alone, spending more than 3 hours on games, and non-functional family. Anxiety and depression were significantly associated with internet gaming disorder at a value of 0.015.
