Abstract

This study attempts to evaluate the performance of 18 selected mutual funds of Birla Sun Life during the period 1st January 2007 to 31 June 2012 using Return -Risk analysis, Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio, Jensen Alpha, and Information ratio. The main objectives of the study are to estimate and compare the excess return per unit of risk evidenced by BSL mutual fund schemes. The results of this study states that BSL Divided Yield Plus and BSL Cash Manger INS Fund are the better performers however BSL Gilt Plus Liquid fund and BSL Life Advantage Fund are moderate performers during the study period. Further it is evident that the long term equity invested portfolio funds of BSL have shown good returns and the debt invested portfolio funds of BSL have recorded less returns only during the study period. Based on the results this study concludes that BSL Dividend Yield Plus Fund among the equity funds and BSL Cash Manger INS Fund among debt funds are the best ones to the investors. Finally it suggests that equity invested portfolio funds of BSL for long term investments and the debt invested portfolio funds of BSL for short run investments are better option.
