Abstract

Self Help Group-Bank Linkage Programme became the most important micro credit programme in the last two decades. NABARD started Self Help Group-Bank Linkage Programme (SBLP) as a pilot project from year 1992 to 1996 for linking poor people with formal banking system. The present study aims to analyze the outlook about the progress of Self Help Group-Bank Linkage Programme (SBLP) and disparity in SBLP (agency wise and region wise) in India. The study is based on secondary data collected from NABARD (Status of micro finance in India reports). The study concluded that although the programme is growing at a faster rate but still there is a high disparity in linkage of groups with different banking agencies and in their region wise position. Government and Banks need to concentrate on it to improve the success rate of the programme for development of the economy and to make it as a powerful tool in upliftment of the poor in India.
