Abstract

The magnitude of NPAs is very high in developing countries like India especially in PSBs. NPAs affect the profitability of banks and reduce the availability of funds to all sectors which ultimately deteriorate the economic development of a country. For giving boost to the economic growth of India, the Prime Minister “Mr. Narendra Modi” launched a “Make in India” campaign on 24 September 2014 to facilitate investment in India, generate employment and transform India into a “Manufacturing Hub”. This paper analyzes the causes and impact of NPAs, trends and level of NPAs in SBI and its Associate banks for the period of seven years from 2008–09 to 2014–15. It identifies the effect of NPAs on Make in India campaign. Finally it suggests some measures to handle the problem of NPAs on the basis of the study with concluding remarks.
