Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of the type ML2 were obtained from Schiff base ligand derived from condensation of cyanoacetylhydrazine and dehydroacetic acid. The complexes have been characterized completely using various spectroscopic techniques which suggested octahedral or distorted octahedral geometry around transition metal ion with Schiff base as tridentate ligand ONO coordinated through azomethine nitrogen and oxygen atoms of hydroxyl and carbonyl group. Studies like powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis (TG, DSC) and ESR spectroscopy were carried out to describe the nature of compounds. Powder XRD indicated crystalline nature of complexes. On the basis of TGA/DSC, the thermal stabilities of complexes follow the order Zn(II) > Ni(II) > Cu(II) > Co (II). In vitro, biological evaluation of compounds have been carried out against pathogenic Gram positive bacteria
