Abstract

Hydroxyapatite like other related calcium phosphate minerals, has been used extensively as an orthopedic implant material for many years due to its excellent biocompatibility, bone bonding ability and also due to its structural and compositional similarity to that of the mineral phase of hard tissue in human bones. Therefore, in this study, HA has been synthesized using calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate (NH4)2HPO4 as calcium and phosphate precursors, respectively. The hydroxyapatite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) in conjunction with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and measuring of density to provide information about crystal structure, composition, functional group distribution, and morphology.
