Abstract

Agrarian Distress has been continuing in India since its very colonial time and has vastly increased in post-Independent India. India's so called neoliberal policies under its democratic model are benefiting the agriculture sector or not was a matter of analysis for this paper. This paper further seeks to understand the major differences between peasant movements in pre and post 1990s India. How the issue of Peasant upsurge has been dealt by the Indian state in contemporary times consists the core of this paper. Along with this, how agrarian distress has transformed itself into a new social movement in India is a serious matter of analysis.
