Study on student performances between secondary school results with that of diploma engineering results: A case for the polytechnic students of Bangladesh

The effect of school performances on student in the later stage of their education is one of the major themes in educational research. In order to find this earlier educational effect, the current study examines the performance ofpolytechnic students of Bangladesh and correlates it totheir earlier performances at the secondary school level. Theperformance of the students indiploma engineering program is evaluated based on the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) achieved after end of the 4 years of the diploma Engineering programme. The results of diploma engineering students are classified according to the different disciplines offered by the polytechnic institutes. Two different disciplines have been consideredfor this study, namely civil and computer technology from four different polytechnic institutes of Bangladesh. This study investigated the extent to which secondary school exam scores has any effect on CGPA of diploma engineering programs of the polytechnic students. It was hypothesized that the students’ performances level varies significantly between the secondary results with that of the diploma engineering results. However, it is observed that there were no significant differences between the performances of the students in two different stages of their education. In short, the diploma engineering results of the students are consistent enough with their previous result achieved in the secondary school.
