Prevalence of HIV Infection in Unregistered Hospital Deliveries in Western India

Transmission of Human Immuno Deficiency Virus/Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) from mother to child is a major public health challenge. India is second most populated country in the world. In India, around 2.4 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. According to a recent survey in India, prevalence of HIV in females and males was 0.29% and 0.43% respectively. Most importantly women who are not registered for Antenatal Care (ANC) and come in labour i.e. unregistered hospital deliveries, have unknown HIV status and these women are at higher risk for transmitting HIV to their newborn babies. In current study, a hospital based retrospective analysis was done to study the prevalence of HIV in unregistered hospital deliveries. We studied a total 8,828 hospital deliveries. Prevalence of unregistered hospital delivery was 19.57%. Prevalence of HIV in unregistered hospital deliveries was 0.4%.
