The protective role of high dietary protein on arsenic induced gonodal toxicity in albino rat

Abstract

Arsenic was given orally to rats as arsenic trioxide, 3mg/kg body wt./day in a single dose for 28 consecutive days. Male Wister rats of 120gm – 140gn were selected for our experiment. The effect of arsenic administration produced decrease in the weight of testis and epididymis. It also produced decrease in sperm count and sperm motility and not only that but also the plasma level of testosterone is decreased significantly. On the other hand high protein diet supplementation along with same arsenic exposure caused partial restoration of normalcy. From this study it is evident that high protein diet supplementation may be effective to counteract the toxic effect of arsenic on male gonad of rat. The study also proposes to apply the same upon the human physiology so far as the seriousness of contamination of arsenic in the world is concerned.
