ESP for increased labour market insertion for doctors

The purpose of this article is to debate upon the necessity of and manner of achieving medical-oriented ESP competence and teaching materials in Medical Schools in European tertiary education. It is our finding that English is taught as a requirement course in the latter, during the first years of Medical School, when language competence post-high school is higher but medical knowledge meagre. When students graduate from Medical School the reverse holds true. Thus, teachers in these faculties should provide undergraduates, who might consider joining the EU labour market subsequent to graduation, with the skills essential to speaking good medical English, accessing medical texts published in English, having meaningful conversations with patients and peers, through original teaching materials and relevant conversation practice situations. An increased number of ESP mandatory medical-related courses for the last years of Medical studies as well as designing necessary teaching materials for the latter are highly recommended.
