Social and Development Issues in Tamil Newspapers

Are the Indian regional newspapers given enough space for Social and Developmental Issues (SDI)? It is a great question in front of the media practitioners, social thinkers and general public. This paper analyses the SDI content published in the Tamil newspapers. Popular Tamil newspapers Daily Thanthi, Dinamalar, Dinamani and Dinakaran were analysed as part of the research. The results shows that they were published more SDI news includes drinking water, road facilities, health and medical services, public distribution, electricity, agriculture & irrigation, education, youth empowerment, employment, developmental projects, public grievances, scheduled caste issues, family welfare, etc. The column “Letters to the Editor” exposes local problems, unsolved long term issues, demands, etc. The newspapers deal the SDI issues with more carefully and positively.
