Education development and literacy rate improvement are key factors influencing the demographic variables like fertility, mortality, migration etc. Education promotes quality of life, particularly with regard to life expectancy, infant mortality, learning and nutritional levels. Therefore, The present study is an attempt to analyze the rural-urban composition of literacy in Haryana using data collected by the 2011census and Sopher's Disparity index (1974) modified by Kundu and Rao (1983)2 has been employed for measurement of male-female disparity in literacy. The study found that there are regional disparities in distribution of the literacy in rural-urban area. It reveals that all the tahsils of Haryana, the male and female literacy rates are higher in urban area than rural area. The male female disparity index in rural area is higher than urban area.
