This research is an attempt to find out the underlying vulnerable factors during flooding which might help to design the relief and rehabilitation phase of disaster management. The research is undertaken among the communities living in six different locations along the Adayar river bank, Chennai City, Tamil Nadu, India. The study reveals cyclone, river flooding and epidemics are the major natural hazards faced by the communities in the study area. However, there is no alternative available for the resettlement of people in the near future, awareness about risk and understanding of the factors responsible for such risks are very crucial towards reducing vulnerability. Besides, socio-economic and cultural reasons also play an important role among the vulnerable communities in their willingness to stay in the same area. This research attempts at helping communities during floods and to decrease their economic vulnerability.
