Scientific attitude is the attitude of being objective in observation and thinking. A person with scientific attitude is truthful in his/her observation, rational in his/her thinking, objective in his/her observation and action, is free from superstitious beliefs, etc. Scientific attitude may be defined as ‘open mindedness, a desire for accurate knowledge, confidence procedure for seeking knowledge and the expectation that the solution of the problem will come through the use of varied knowledge.’ (Tyler, 1960). Thus, scientific attitude of a person reflects a particular way of thinking of that person. It is an adoption of a particular approach by a person in doing a work or solving a problem or arriving at conclusion or making decisions or observing a situation, etc.
The main objectives of the present study were (a) to determine the level of scientific attitude of students studying in secondary schools of Dibrugarh District of Assam and (b) to compare the scientific attitude of secondary school students with respect to sex, locality, caste and medium of instruction.
The present study reveals that the level of scientific attitude of secondary school students of Dibrugarh District is not satisfactory. No significant difference is found between the mean scientific attitude scores of boys and girls secondary school students of Dibrugarh District. However, a significant difference is found between urban and rural students studying in secondary schools of Dibrugarh District as far as their scientific attitude is concerned. Moreover, a significant difference in mean attitude scores of the students studying in different medium of instruction is observed.
