A Study on Making of Pottery in the Sivasagar District of Assam

Abstract

The making of pottery is one of the most important crafts in Assam. Pottery has been playing a significant role in the economy and society of Assam. The pottery not only provides income and employment but also carries cultural and social importance. The important aspects of the traditional craft are that it is largely environment friendly and an important tool for the empowerment of potters in the state. The very nature of the pottery bears inherent problems on its growth and development for several years in Assam. Though the craft has been playing a very important role in the economy of Assam, it is cannot considered a sunrise craft in Assam. The right kind of investment in the craft can turn it into a gainful occupation in the economy of Assam. The paper highlights the different aspects of pottery in the Sivasagar district of Assam.
