Constituent Structure of Noun Phrases IN Manipuri

The present paper discusses the structure of the various constituents of noun phrases in Manipuri- Head nouns, Adjectives, Numerals, Determiners (Demonstrative particles, Quantifiers and Emphatic markers) and Negatives. Head nouns - the only constituent capable of taking the place of the whole noun phrase. Adjectives - are derived adjectives formed by prefixing ‘ə’ and suffixing ‘bə’ to the verbal root. Numerals- cardinal numerals can only follow the noun while the occurrence of the ordinals has no fixed order. Determiners - the demonstrative particle -si (this) and -du (that) are freely used to indicate definiteness while məsi and mədu are used with some indication on the noun. In Negative - it can be inferred that negative qualifiers has no fixed occurrence; the negative quantifiers when used with singular pronouns have a fixed occurrence while the negative quantifiers have no fixed occurrence when used with plural pronouns.
