The act of migration whether international or internal is a commonplace in Bangladesh and shows an increasing trend. In this study, two canonical discriminant functions have been developed for discriminating non-migrant vs internal migrant sending households and non-migrant vs international migrant sending households.
The study used panel survey data collected under BIDS, IRRI, BRAC from survey conducted in 2000 and 2008. The panel survey 2000 round covered 1880 sample households from 62 villages covering 57 districts.
The findings of the canonical discriminant function on non-migrant and internal migrant sending households indicate that household income, education of the household head, household size and age of the household head are the remarkable factors in discriminating non-migrant and internal migrant sending households. In addition to household income and household size, other factors discriminating between non-migrant and international migrant sending households are amount of loan taken by the households from Bank/NGO, economic status of the households.
