A Fairly Honourable Defeat is a dark comedy of errors. Julius decides to demonstrate how easily loving couple, caring friends and devoted siblings can betray their loyalties. Murdoch attempts to emphasise the manipulability of the human mind due to its many flaws, and also underscoring the fact that nobody, not even someone who is naturally respected for the great virtuousness is able to become enlightened and see the realities of others. The phenomenon of vanity has an extremely interesting portrayal in the novel. Iris Murdoch puts realistic characters in contrived situations, and shows how their moral views and understandings affect their lives. Murdoch manipulates the pretentions of middle-class life and reveals how easy it is to make a good man fool himself into disaster once his vanity is aroused. She explores the continuing battle between evil and good in the contemporary world.
