Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Context of Identity Politics in Assam

Identity is one's consciousness of one's self and others perception of one's individuality. Identity politics is the attainment of empowerment, representation and recognition of social groups. The Assam of India is a multi ethnic, multi lingual state. However after independence due to many reasons the tribes of Assam started to felt their identity is being threatened. Thus comes up the fight for identity. During 1990s came the ethnic violence. Till now the conflict led death and homelessness of much people. The present paper is an attempt to understand the causes of identity politics in Assam and how far the situation of violence led to the internal displacement of the persons and their present situation.
