Role of Non-Government Organisations in the Rehabilitation Process of Sri Lankan Refugees

The conflict in Sri lanka has suffered various repercussions, the most dire being the displacement of thousands of men, women and children alike. Crossing the sea, tamil refugees escaped to India, leaving behind burning homes in search of safety and for the hopeful few, a better life. In such circumstances the role of the host country, becomes extremely important in ensuring the rehabiliation process is aligned with the hopes and aspirations of the conflict-hit people. It is however, not just the role of the government that comes into play, but several other bodies like non-government organisations (NGOs) and international agencies can bring immaculate change in the lives of the people.

The paper aims to understand government intervention with respect to rehabilitation of tamil refugees and compare this with the efforts of the local non-government organisations drawing conclusions regarding the efficiency of both these bodies.

The researcher will also explore the role of NGOs in particular, and comment on the significance of regional support and how it can stand supreme when dealing with refugees in need of constant physical and emotional support. There will also be a Brief comment on the function of international agencies in the state of Tamilnadu and the effectiveness of their programmes.
