In a federation, centralization of political powers in the hands of centre creates reaction from the regions or strata of people whose interests seem to have been ignored. In India also regional forces are emerged to achieve the goals of socio-economic, political and cultural significance of the people of different regions. The centre's authoritarian policy of disintegration and dismemberment of Assam led to a bitter confrontation and a sense of helplessness and frustration in state leadership which in turn energize regional forces. However, regionalism in India is a process of national integration and it is not something anti-system or anti-national. This paper examines to what extent regionalism in Assam has been contributing towards the growth of federalizing process and national integration in India.
