Challenges and Opportunities for the Educated Visually Impaired

Education of disabled people ranges from free schooling to integration into mainstream educational institutions to special schools with appropriate learning facilities. The present paper attempts to highlight the plight of those blind persons who in spite of odds in life are able to get education. It is suggested that literacy has much more meaning for visually impaired as it lessens their pain and opens up opportunities for their development. The present study dealt with the educational support which visually impaired had received during the course of their academic life and the role of the special institutions in the lives of visually impaired. Since all the respondents belonged to special institutions a majority of the respondents received help in their studies from the teachers, the class mates and the family members.
